I truly believe that the single best thing we can do for any person is simply to pray for them.
If you believe that what the Bible says is true, then you believe that God can accomplish anything. You believe that we can communicate with God through prayer.
What better way to spread protection over your loved ones – specifically, your children – than through asking the God of the universe, the God that breathed life into your children, to give them what they truly need? What only He knows at their deepest level?
It is why I am so passionate about prayer.
If you believe all that, then prayer is truly, without a doubt, the BEST gift you can give anyone. Especially your kids.
Now a little background on me…I was raised in a Christian household. I accepted Christ at the ripe old age of 7 at Awana one night. However, I was an adult when I first really learned how to pray. And it completely changed my life.
I didn’t know I could bring God every minute, seemingly insignificant detail about my life. I didn’t know I could be angry at God, that I could take my anger to God and let it all out – as if He didn’t already know my heart. I didn’t know I could pray SO specifically. Bottom line, I flat out didn’t know I was “allowed” to pray like this.
I didn’t know until I read the book The Power of a Praying Mom, by Stormie Omartian. Seriously, this book revolutionized my prayer life. (I later went on to read The Power of a Praying Wife, and OH MY GOODNESS, it forever changed my marriage. More on that in a post to come!)
If you are looking for a book to guide you through the praying process, I HIGHLY recommend these books! (Or truly, ANY of The Power of the Praying ____ Books!)
To get you started, here are a few of the main and major topics I cover daily in prayer over my children.
Their salvation is the #1 thing that will affect them for all of eternity. Pray that they will have a “boring” spiritual life – very little drama with a straight forward acceptance of Christ. Pray that they will never stray from the faith.
This probably goes without saying, but pray that they will stay safe in any and all circumstances. Pray this throughout the day, as your child(ren)s location changes or circumstances dictate. Pray specifically, as well.
3. Their health
Another one that probably goes without saying is praying over their health. Pray for them to remain healthy at all times. If they are sick or have a specific ailment or possible concern, then pray for guidance, clarity in handling it as their mother, and healing over every part of their body. Ask God to place His healing hands on you children – protecting them in a way that only He can.
4.Their future spouses
As a mom of all boys, this is especially important to me.
But whether a mom of boys or girls, it is SO important to pray for their future spouses. And it’s never too early to start! My youngest is 2 and I have been praying for his future spouses daily since he was a newborn!
Pray for your children’s future spouses in much the same way you pray for your own children: for their health and safety, that they come from a Godly family, that they will have a relationship with Jesus, and that they will be the perfect fit for your children and family as a whole. Pray for a good relationship with your future son or daughter in law.
5. Their futures
Pray for every aspect of your child’s future. Pray that God will give them hope and a future. Pray that He will be a part of their future. Pray that they will discover their Godly gifts and talents from a young age, that they will nurture and develop them, and that they will use them for God’s glory. Pray that you will be a successful, integral part of growing their future.
6. Their school life
Pray that your child will be protected at school. Pray for your child’s teachers. Pray that your child will obtain a good education each day. Pray that your children will be a light for Jesus in their classroom.
If your child is not yet in school, start praying anyway! Again, it’s never too early to begin praying over their future teachers and education.
7. Their friendships
I have often looked back over my childhood and wondered why my foundation in Christ never really faltered. Sure, I was a typical kid who had their challenges with not always doing the right thing. No one is perfect. But I always knew in my heart that Jesus was my savior, and ultimately always returned to Him. I realized that a large reason for this was because for some reason that I don’t even fully understand (maybe my parents were always praying for me, too!), I always surrounded myself with Christian friends. Obviously, not all of my friends were Christians, but I always had solid Christian friendships in my life, people that believed the same thing I did and could encourage and guide me throughout the way.
There will come a time where you may not be your child’s greatest influence – their friends may have some serious pull over them. That’s a natural part of growing up and asserting their independence as young adults. This is why it is SO important that your children will be surrounded with Christ-centered young people, starting from as young an age as possible!
8. Christian mentors
This goes hand in hand with praying for their friendships, and was another major factor in my growth as a Christian from a young age. In my junior high and high school years I had some solid Christian adults in my life that modeled for me what it looks like to follow Christ. I am praying for the same thing for my children, especially in their teen years.
Pray that your children will go through life with Godly people to look up to and follow as a positive example of living for Christ.
In addition to these things I pray for daily, I also make a habit of continually thanking God throughout the day for every single blessing.
When I pick my oldest son up from school, I thank God for his safety that day.
When my husband comes home from work, I thank God for His job and ability to provide
When I tuck my kids in at night, I thank God for everything throughout the day.
When I’m cleaning the house, I thank God for providing this house for us.
And the list goes on and on!
If you are feeling stuck in your prayer life or just plain need some help with where to start praying for your kids, I hope these suggestions help push you in the right direction.
